Green Gas & Liquids' Galloxol® carbon capture technology delivers CO₂ that can go straight into the crop, in gaseous form, with no liquefaction step required. In operating installations, the captured gas has been analysed against ISBT specifications, the Dutch company states. The captured gas met the limits. For greenhouse operators, the promise of a local, sustainable CO₂ supply has long come with a catch: bringing captured CO₂ to a condition safe to dose over a crop has typically meant liquefying it — a process that is capital-intensive, energy-hungry, and mechanically complex. Green Gas & Liquids says its Galloxol platform removes that step entirely, delivering CO₂ that can be dosed directly from the capture unit, in gaseous form.
Beverage specification
CO₂ captured from a biomass boiler using Galloxol has been analysed against the International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT) and European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) specifications, with the measured gas meeting the ISBT limits — under real operating conditions, not in a laboratory, emphasizes Nicola Donato, Business Development Manager at Green Gas & Liquids.
"ISBT is not a horticultural standard — it is a beverage specification, and across most parameters a considerably stricter one. What the result does show is how little the Galloxol® process itself adds to the gas: on a suitable fuel and a well-run boiler, it captures CO₂ cleanly enough to satisfy a specification written for carbonated drinks."
Central to the Galloxol process is the solvent used to capture CO₂ from flue gas. "Unlike many amine-based capture systems that rely on chemicals with their own handling, toxicity, or disposal concerns, Galloxol uses a solvent that is both safe and biodegradable." That matters for two reasons, according to Nicola: it simplifies the health, safety, and environmental compliance burden for plant operators, and it removes a source of chemical risk from CO₂ that ends up enriching crops people will eat.

Gas in, gas out: skipping liquefaction entirely
The core technical breakthrough is what Galloxol® doesn't require, Nicola continues. "Conventional CO₂ production typically involves capturing the gas, then liquefying it for purification, storage, and transport, a step that demands significant electrical input to run the compressors and refrigeration equipment it depends on."
Galloxol delivers CO₂ fit for crop enrichment directly in gaseous form. For a greenhouse operator, that means CO₂ captured on-site can be piped straight into the growing environment without ever being liquefied, stored as liquid, and re-gasified for use. The gas goes from boiler exhaust to greenhouse enrichment in a single continuous process.
"This is a key practical distinction between Galloxol and amine-based capture. Amine systems generally rely on liquefaction as the polishing step: it is where residual solvent carryover, degradation products, and other trace contaminants are separated out. Galloxol does not depend on that step to produce a gas fit for greenhouse use — which is precisely why the liquefaction section can be left out of the plant altogether where the grower doses on site, and included only where storage or off-site supply calls for it."
Lower capex, lower opex
Removing liquefaction doesn't just simplify the process, it changes the economics, the Netherlands-based CO₂ capture specialists state. "Liquefaction equipment is a major capital line item, and because it relies on rotary compressors running continuously, it also carries ongoing electricity costs and a recurring maintenance burden, from routine servicing to eventual overhaul or replacement of rotating parts."
By eliminating that step, Green Gas & Liquids says Galloxol systems are designed to deliver competitive Capex and Opex from the outset and to keep costs down over the life of the plant, since there is no compression and refrigeration equipment to power or maintain. The company positions this as what extends access to dedicated CO₂ capture to a wider range of operators, including greenhouse operations for which it was previously out of reach.
Four systems running
Perhaps the most important detail for prospective customers is that Galloxol isn't a newly commercialized concept. Green Gas & Liquids has had plants running on this technology since 2019, with four systems currently in operation across the horticulture and biogas industries in the Netherlands, Italy and Austria.
For greenhouse growers and other CO₂ users evaluating their supply options, the combination of a gaseous product that can be dosed straight onto the crop, a safe and biodegradable capture chemistry, and the removal of liquefaction costs adds up to a different value proposition than conventional CO₂ supply, stresses Nicola. "It's a local, sustainable source of CO₂ delivered at lower capital and operating cost than liquefaction-based alternatives — and, on a suitable fuel and combustion regime, clean enough to have tested within ISBT limits."
