New potworm netting provides protection in orchid cultivation

In modern orchid cultivation, everything revolves around quality, uniformity, and healthy root development. In particular, fungus gnats (Lyprauta) and their larvae (potworms) pose a persistent challenge in the cultivation of Phalaenopsis orchids. These larvae can cause significant damage to the root system through feeding, resulting in reduced plant growth and lower plant quality.

Ideal combination with biological control
Previously, protective netting with an 850-micron netting size were commonly used. Amevo's new and improved potworm netting features a finer 725-micron netting size. This smaller opening is even more effective at keeping unwanted insects out while remaining fully compatible with biological control methods. For example, the rove beetle Atheta remains beneath the netting, allowing biological control agents to work at maximum efficiency.

No restriction on plant growth
A common concern when using protective netting is its impact on light transmission. Although the improved potworm netting has a smaller netting size, an enhanced horizontal weaving pattern has actually increased light penetration. Amevo's potworm netting allows as much as 93% of light to pass through, ensuring that crop growth is barely affected. For Phalaenopsis orchids, which depend heavily on stable light conditions, this is essential.

Minimal shrinkage
The potworm netting also offers clear long-term benefits. The material is dimensionally stable and maintains its structure even under intensive use and fluctuating greenhouse climate conditions. Thanks to its minimal shrinkage, the netting stays securely in place, ensuring consistent performance and uniform water distribution throughout the entire cultivation cycle. In addition, it carries a fire behavior certification classified as Class 1, dR0.

Easy to handle
Ease of use is just as important in daily operations. The potworm netting weighs only 22 grams per square meter, making it lightweight and easy to install and handle. Currently, the rolls are available in a width of 260 cm. A 180 cm version will soon be added to production, and other sizes are available upon request.

Proven results
Following extensive trials at several Phalaenopsis nurseries, where the renewed netting is already being used, the results have been highly positive. Based on these experiences, Amevo is confident that it offers a high-quality product at a competitive price. The cultivation manager at Butterfly Orchids has also reported positive results at both the company's existing facility and its new location in Andel, Netherlands.
