NL: Rose grower expands to fruit during energy crisis

At Valk Rozen, located on the Pieter Bregmanlaan in Pijnacker, the Netherlands, rose cultivation has been at the heart of the business since 1983. When energy prices spiked sharply in 2022, the Valk family looked for ways to adapt.

As reported by Telstar Online (link in Dutch), the company converted one-third of its greenhouse space — some 5,000 square metres, to the production of fruit crops. The range includes figs, apricots, nectarines, peaches, cherries, plums, and kiwis. The fresh fruit is sold directly from the nursery, alongside part of the rose production.

In addition to diversifying into fruit, the business has invested in on-site energy generation. Some 1,700 solar panels are installed on the rear section of the greenhouse roof, covering the company's own energy needs. Any surplus power is stored in a battery system, which is also fed by a combined heat and power (CHP) unit.
