MPS-ABC updating methodology for calculating points for crop protection agents

MPS-ABC uses an environmental indicator system to record crop protection agents, also known as MPS-MIND. MPS-MIND distinguishes between crop protection agents on the basis of their environmental impact and categorises them as white, green, amber and red.

Optimized methodology
As per period 5, 2025, the methodology for calculating points for crop protection agents is being updated. With this new methodology, MPS is aiming to reduce the environmental impact of crop protection agents – an important step towards improving sustainability in the sector.

The method by which usage of green, amber and red substances and the associated standards are included in the qualification has been revised.

The use of green substances has increased in recent years. This is partly because amber and red substances are increasingly being banned, but also because more and more new products contain green active substances. By introducing a new calculation method, we are responding to these changes and ensuring that MPS-ABC contributes to making growing practices more sustainable.

What is changing?
The new method for awarding points consists of two parts, the weighting of active substances (green, amber and red active substances are given a specific weighting, while substances with a higher environmental impact (amber and red) receive a higher weighting than green ones), and the merging of standards (the standards for the different colours are being merged, instead of separate points for each category, you will receive a total crop protection score).

A MIND impact score is calculated for each active substance, with excessive use of crop protection agents having a greater impact on the final score. This method encourages and visibly rewards the sustainable use of crop protection agents.

Calculation and qualification
As of 19 May 2025, you will see the new calculation and your new qualification in the Customer Portal. In addition, the layout of the crop protection graphs and table has changed.
